Our latest blog covers the last year from the off. Starting with our best January ever swiftly followed by the Beast From The East!! Which changed things for customers plus one of the lake. Firstly not too many fisherman came out in that weather but it also knocked back and killed all the oxygenating pond weed in Three Springs Lake which is shallower than the other 2 lakes.
After that cold spell it instantly became super hot with the hottest summer we have had since opening, the hottest on record, again not good for summer trout fisherman who barely ventured out. We did have our regular anglers who come weekly and most caught fish each visit throughout summer, but depth and fly choice was crucial. More crucial than any summer before! Blobs on the bottom in daytime would generally find the fish…Or a dry damsel at rare times.
We have to thank our loyal customers both day and season ticket holders for your support as it all goes back in to improving the fishery and facilities and hopefully making your visits more enjoyable and rewarding! These last few months saw the new toilet block being installed, the fish cleaning area completed, a new cooking area for hot food to be served is nearly ready, new swims created, leak fixing in some areas, as well as deepening and making longer the stock pond…Plans for next summer include more flowing areas with high power pumps.
To date we now stock rainbow, brown, golden, sandy, tiger, sparctic as well as 2 types of blue trout! Fish to 20lbs are expected to be stocked in the next 2 weeks as well as 100s coming in the 4-6lb range plus lots of table sized stockies! Also we will be growing on some very big trout for future stockings. Last year saw 165 fish caught in 5-10 lb range, over 100 brown trout caught, plus 27 browns over 10 lb up to 15 lbs!! plus a dozen double figure rainbows and a few hundred tigers and blues as well as 14 golden trout so a good mix and range of sizes. As well as numerous bonus rudd over 2 lbs and some reaching 4 lbs landed ,wont be long till Thornwood produces a UK record.
We held some great events also- from the Orvis 50/50 ,about more women taking up our sport and sharing it with the guys, World Fishing Day for Fishing TV in June to get more youngsters into fishing, Fishing For Heroes events, and a great Christmas party to thank the regulars and helpers who have made the fishery what it is, as well as a fantastic end of year Grand Slam Match which ended with a tie on joint place and went down to the wire. More of these events are planned for this year on a monthly basis all on a different theme watch the website for the dates but all will be at the end of each month, all a good social gathering with great food. Another new monthly thing will be a volunteer work party event to do different jobs around the lakes, these will be first weekend of each month and payment in fishing and food either a morning or a day.
Happy New Year and tight lines to all and hope to see you soon here!
